BIOGRAPHY

American Baritone Jorell Williams, known for having “a solid vocal core and easy, natural production” (Opera News), and “a deliciously resonant baritone voice” (Broadway World), has been heralded as “a rock-solid singer with a keen understanding of his own expressive depths” (The Washington Post), and is gracing the world’s most prominent concert and opera stages.

 

Now based in Toronto, the 2023-24 season showcases Mr. Williams in debut engagements with Greek National Opera, The Ottawa Choral Society, Symphony Nova Scotia, Opera Omaha, Catapult Opera, The Canadian Art Song Project, and returns to the Elmer Iseler Singers, the National Philharmonic Orchestra, and Brooklyn Art Song Society.

 

In 2023, Jorell gave “an outstanding vocal performance” as Maduka with Tapestry Opera in the world premiere of Métis composer Ian Cusson’s Of The Sea.

 

Recent highlights for Jorell include the title role of Don Pasquale with Opera Omaha, Belcore in L’elisir d’amore with Dayton Opera, Escamillo with Pacific Opera Victoria’s Carmen, Don Giovanni with Opera Columbus, and his Lincoln Center Theater Off-Broadway debut in the world premiere of Ricky Ian Gordon and Lynn Nottage’s critically acclaimed Intimate Apparel, a co-production with The Metropolitan Opera, filmed for PBS Great Performances.

 

Jorell is widely recognized for his concert work, having performed as a soloist in Orff’s Carmina Burana, and Handel’s Messiah, as well as Brahms’ Ein Deutsches Requiem, and Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony. Jorell has appeared with the Omaha Symphony, Amadeus Choir, Orchestra of St. Luke’s, Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, and Juneau Symphony.

 

Jorell holds degrees from the Manhattan School of Music and SUNY Purchase Conservatory of Music. He is an advocate for artist rights and an artistic council advisor for On-Site Opera, as well as a board member for the Brooklyn Art Song Society, using his experience to consult with arts organizations on their Equity, Diversity and Inclusion initiatives.
